Arcadia

A year-long project to document urban colour in a greenspace designed by the Victorians.

August, 2021 | Cotton and paint on paper

This work was produced during lockdown in Mapperley Park - a place designed after the Enclosure Act to provide greenspace and fresh air to the people of Nottingham. It uses seasonal colours, meticulously documented through site-specific walks. There are twelve works, one for each month.

These small, intimate pieces encourage the viewer to slow down and take notice. Abstraction generates evocation - meditative space that holds a spring-like sense of potential. Materials are meticulously researched to provide a direct connection to wild, living colour.

“Only by simplicity can we experience meaning” - Anni Albers

I gratefully acknowledge the support of Arts Council England, and the mentorship of Mark Devereux.
